Duties and Responsibilities
The Court Interpreter will work in the Court Interpretation and Translation Section within the Division of Court Services (Registry), under the supervision of the Chief of the Section. He or she will work in a demanding and high-pressure but rewarding environment.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- provide simultaneous interpretation of court hearings, meetings, press conferences, and other events at the Court;
- provide consecutive and chuchotage interpretation at the duty station or on mission;
- prepare thoroughly for hearings or meetings;
- observe the established terminology and usage;
- actively contribute to the terminology and reference databases of the Section;
- carry out translation and/or revision duties when there are no scheduled interpretation assignments;
- take part in regular training sessions with a view to refining his/her interpreting skills, and
- participate in Section working groups and perform other language services as required by the Chief of Section.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will possess:
- a university degree in interpretation, translation, linguistics, law or other relevant subject matter;
- five years of relevant experience with an advanced university degree (seven years with a Bachelor's degree), preferably with at least two years in conference interpretation in an international organisation;
- a good knowledge of office computer applications;
- the ability to work as part of a team, flexibility, initiative and willingness to learn new skills.
Knowledge of Languages
Mother tongue proficiency in Acholi, Lango, Ateso, Kumam, Swahili, Lingala, Fur, Zaghawa, Masalit, or Arabic and an excellent level of English and/or French required. Short-listed candidates will be invited to take the ICC interpretation and translation tests.
NB: The Court reserves the right not to make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower grade, or to make an appointment with a modified job description.
