Duties and Responsabilities

The Court Interpretation and Translation Section provides high quality linguistic services to ensure efficient conduct of Court business. These services are provided to the Presidency, Chambers and Registry and include translation , revision and editing of Court documents; consecutive and simultaneous interpretation for meetings, courtroom hearings, press conferences, specialised seminars, diplomatic briefings and other events in-house or away from the seat of the Court. The Service also recruits, trains and accredits field interpreters needed to work for Registry officials in the field and/or at the seat of the Court. The Service provides relevant information to make sure that all its users are familiar with the appropriate procedures and types of linguistic services provided as well as the requirements of the relevant professions.

The Head of Interpretation

  1. implements the rules and guidelines which structure the work of the Interpretation Unit, monitors compliance with requirements and adapts the system to meet evolving needs;
  2. recruits and organises recruitment of staff and freelance interpreters;
  3. directs planning of interpretation services, drafts work schedule of staff and freelance interpreters bearing in mind the rules of the profession and conditions at the Court;
  4. monitors the quality of interpretation; if necessary, designs modalities for improvement;
  5. in consultation with the Interpreter Trainer monitors the progress of junior staff interpreters;
  6. represents the Interpretation Unit tactfully and with expertise when dealing with Court staff at all levels representatives of other organisations, and freelance interpreters;
  7. is proactive in identifying issues arising from service provision and resolving them;
  8. communicates and organises relevant information flow within the Interpretation Unit and the rest of the Section: submits written reports each month to the Chief of Section on all aspects of interpretation services;
  9. interprets at court proceedings and high level events at the seat of the Court or elsewhere when so required;
  10. participates in Section working groups and performs other tasks as required by the Chief of Section.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate has:

  1. an advanced university degree in interpretation, translation, languages, law or other relevant subjects;
  2. at least 7 years (9 years in the case of a first level university degree) of experience in simultaneous interpretation, preferably in an international organisation where he/she is currently an interpreter; demonstrated experience in organising interpretation services with progressively increasing responsibilities;
  3. excellent analytical, organisational, planning, drafting and IT skills;
  4. excellent interpersonal skills, tact and discretion;
  5. a thorough knowledge of the regulatory framework governing interpretation services in the UN context;
  6. broad knowledge of established practices and recent developments in interpretation services in other international organisations;
  7. comprehensive understanding of the International Criminal Court’s basic documents and the specificities of court interpretation, also with regard to the uses of new technologies;
  8. demonstrated ability to work in a team, flexibility, initiative and openness to skills development.

Knowledge of Languages

Mother tongue proficiency in English or French, near native proficiency in other working language of the Court; knowledge of a third official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian) will be considered an advantage.

NB: The Court reserves the right not to make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower grade, or to make an appointment with a modified job description.
