Program Highlights
20 hours of simultaneous interpretation training from Portuguese into English in individual booths with the supervision and guidance of experienced professors.
15 hours of lectures and classes on Brazilian Language and culture
Registration limited to 12 participants, so that participants's performance can be appropriately monitored.
Course Schedule
The program will run from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Classes and interpreting training sessions will be distributed in morning and afternoon in alternating periods. Participants will have 80 minutes for lunch around campus.
Interpreting sessions will be based on real conference material on varied topics that are relevant to the market. Classes and lectures will include conference vocabulary, Brazilian rhetorical strategies and slang, as well as a variety of topics such as: a panoramic view of Brazilian geography and history, environmental and economical issues that are significant in the media, Brazilian popular music and art, an update on Brazilian politics and industrial development.

Visiting & PUC-Rio Faculty, experienced in the Brazilian and international market.
Participants
Professional interpreters with fluent mastery of Portuguese (eligible for a Portuguese-C classification by AIIC standards).
Note: participants with other B or A languages, other than English, are eligible to enroll, though no official monitoring can be guaranteed.

Registration Deadline

Places are limited to 12 students, so it is advisable to apply early.
PUC-Rio reserves the right to cancel the course if the minimum number of participants is not reached by Dec. 18th.
Cancellation
Registration cancelled by July 15th will be refunded, less a 15% processing fee, only if the cancellation does not impact the minimum number of participants needed. No refunds or credits will be issued after July 15th, 2009. All refund requests must be made in writing
Certificate
A certificate of attendance will be issued at the conclusion of the training program.
Tuition
Total cost of the 35 hour-program per student is: R$ 2.955,00 (in reais, Brazilian currency (equivalent to 1.154,25 Euros in the exchange rate of February 3rd), to be paid via credit card in two installments - the first by June 26th, 2010 and the second by July 25th, 2010.
Required Document
- Passport with valid visa (hand in photocopies and show originals)
- ID Card and CPF (only for foreigners who live in Brazil)
Note that according to Brazilian laws, extension courses do not give foreigners the right to obtain a student visa.
