Description

The IDB's Interpretation Section is currently seeking candidates for the position of Staff Interpreter.  This unit provides interpretation services for the Boards of Governors and the Boards of Executive Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank  and the Inter-American Investment Corporation, the Multilateral Investment Fund's Donors Committee, and senior management committees.  It also hires and coordinates interpretation services for Bank seminars and other events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interprets into English and Spanish from at least three of the four official languages (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese), employing appropriate vocabulary and correctly applying professional, scientific, and technical concepts and terms.
  • Prepares for meetings by reviewing Bank documents and doing research to facilitate understanding of issues and concepts.
  • Contributes to in house terminology files.
  • Acts as coordinating interpreter for free-lance teams at Headquarters and for the English or Spanish booth at the Annual Meeting.
  • Assists the Chief of the Interpretation Section in his/her duties and replaces the Chief in his/her absence when necessary.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Education:  Advanced university degree or equivalent training and an internationally recognized Interpretation Certificate.  A university degree in fields related to the Bank's work is desirable; an in-depth understanding of economic, financial and development concepts and terminology is essential.
  • Experience:  A minimum of eight years of recent experience as conference interpreter, including at least four years with international organizations.  Recent in-house experience as a staff interpreter at an international organization is highly desirable.
  • Languages:  Perfect command of English and Spanish and excellent knowledge of French and/or Portuguese.

  • Functional and technical expertise:  Has superior skills as an interpreter and a thorough knowledge of international development issues and technical terminology in relevant fields.  Reports punctually to all assignments.
  • Initiative, drive for results and adaptability:  Initiates and supports improvements at work, acting resourcefully in response to work demands.  Must be able to work under stressful conditions while maintaining a sustained level of performance.
