The initial appointment is limited for a duration of one year only. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and / or the availability of the funds. Priority consideration for vacancies at the P3 level will be given to internal candidates and candidates who have passed a competitive examination.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Senior Coordinator of the Interpretation and Translation Unit (ITU), and the direct supervision of the Translation Team Leader, the Translator will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Translates from French into English, occasionally without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects (mainly legal), dealt with by the Extraordinary Chambers within the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
  • Identifies new terminology material and submits it for consideration of the revisers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Professionalism: Good translation and writing skills; high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text with a good grasp of the subject matter. Knowledge of legal translation and subjects dealt with by the United Nations. Able to use all sources of reference, consultation and information relevant to the text at hand. Able to work under pressure and maintain adequate speed and volume of output observing deadlines. Remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work. Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda. Planning and Organizing: Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently. Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the Unit; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status in translation, linguistics, or relevant fields. The United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators/Precis-writers (English) is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in translation. Experience in the United Nations, an international tribunal, an international organisation is desirable. Experience in legal translation is desirable.

Languages

The official working languages of the Extraordinary Chambers within the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) are Khmer, English and French. For this position, the candidate must have English as main language and an excellent knowledge of French. Knowledge of Khmer is desirable.
