The initial appointment is limited for a duration of one year only. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds. The appointment is limited to the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT).

Responsibilities

This position is located within the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials, established to assist the Extraordinary Chambers within the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Head of the Interpretation and Translation and Unit (ITU) and the Senior Coordinator, and the direct supervision of the Interpretation Team Leader. Within delegated authority, the Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:  

  • Provide simultaneous and consecutive/whispering interpretation from English into French, at various meetings as and when the need arises - this includes interpreting for judicial meetings, investigative interviews, trial hearings, press conferences, etc.
  • Act as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting, as necessary.
  • Translate when he/she is not required as interpreter.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

University degree and/or diploma in interpretation from an internationally recognized school of interpreters. A relevant combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of the diploma. Preference will be given to candidates for this position who have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Interpreters (French).

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in interpretation. Experience of interpretation in the United Nations, an international tribunal, an international organisation or an international body dealing with legal matters is an asset. Demonstrated experience in translation is also an asset.

Languages

The official working languages of the ECCC are Khmer, English and French. For this particular post, the incumbent must have French as main language and equivalent command and excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Khmer is an asset. Ability to interpret from French into English is an asset.

Other Skills
