Communicate! is pleased to introduce AIIC’s new VEGA subsite designed to present conference interpretation to all our visitors. Whether you're simply curious about the profession, considering the possibility of getting into it, already studying interpretation or setting out on your career path, VEGA will try to answer any questions that you may have.
Our profession has grown over the last decade and training opportunities are more abundant than ever. Yet many interested in interpretation often wonder where to find out more about what is involved in becoming a conference interpreter, what skills are necessary, or what the market situation is. VEGA was created to supply that information both through an interactive site and a network of volunteers willing to respond to further questions.
The VEGA site offers four profiles as a starting point to your visit: (1) student; (2) university graduate; (3) beginner in the profession, and (4) experienced conference interpreter. All of these routes lead to practical information illustrated with examples from the daily life of a professional interpreter. The aim is to present the reality of what we do.
You will find information on the basic tools required to become a professional conference interpreter, on what studies may prove useful to you, on the importance of your native language, on obstacles you might encounter, and much more, espacially prepared by the VEGA team or drawn from the AIIC archives. The site aims to give you a comprehensive overview with a light touch and to help you decide if this profession is for you. If you already know that it is, you’ll find information that we hope will ease your way forward. And for those who have already begun, the VEGA network prepares useful information such as a series of articles on your first contract at international organization.
We invite you to get started. Follow your star! Enjoy the trip!
