The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking an English-language translator and interpreter for the Chinese, English and Portuguese Division of its Language Services located at IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C. (USA).
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duty of the position is to translate a variety of Fund texts under the general supervision of the Division Chief. Responsibilities will include:
- ensuring that translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original text
- researching points of terminology, language, and subject matter
- revising materials translated by less experienced staff or external contractors, or performing same-language editing of the latter
- providing simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at HQ and on mission, under the supervision of the Chief Interpreter
Qualifications
Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to translate economic, financial, legal, and statistical material into native-level English from
(i) Spanish and French and
(ii) one of the following other languages: Arabic, Chinese, German, Portuguese.
Additionally, candidates should have excellent simultaneous interpretation skills from Spanish and French into English, and from English into French or Spanish. Additional language capability in translation or interpretation will be considered a asset.
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience, preferably with international organizations.
Other requirements include a high level of competence in office automation; the capacity to work efficiently and effectively under pressure and to adapt rapidly to changing requirements while maintaining high levels of production and quality; skill and initiative in researching points of terminology, language, and subject matter; the ability to produce translations that require little or no revision; initiative; versatility; good interpersonal skills; the ability to work as part of a team; and the capacity to develop into a fully autonomous translator requiring revision only for the most difficult texts.
Administrative skills and experience would be regarded as an asset. Pre-selected candidates will be required to take translation and simultaneous interpretation tests in the relevant languages and to participate in a panel interview.
