About the ICTY

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is a United Nations court of law established in 1993 to prosecute persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991. It is a criminal court that applies a sui generis mixture of common law and  continental legal systems. Established as an ad hoc judicial institution, its completion strategy has been endorsed by the Security Council for a staggered and ordered closure. Estimates as of end 2009 suggest that all trials are expected to be completed in late 2012 and all appellate work is scheduled to be completed by February 2014.

The two official languages of the Tribunal are English and French. In addition to that, and in accordance with international human rights standards, all accused have a right to use their native language in court. The accused before the Tribunal speak Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Albanian or Macedonian. As a consequence, all court proceedings are held in at least three, and sometimes four, languages. Simultaneous interpretation in English, French and the language of the accused is provided during all court hearings and sessions.

Both staff and free-lance interpreters working in ICTY hearings and sessions are bound by the Tribunal's Code of Ethics for Interpreters and Translators.

The Tribunal applies the AIIC-United Nations agreement.

More information about the ICTY, including indictments, case info sheets, court records and web-streaming of proceedings, can be found at http://www.icty.org .

How to get to the ICTY

You can take the following public transport:

Tram 17 from Holland Spoor  Station (international) or Centraal Station to the Statenplein stop. The ICTY is a 2 minute walk from the tram stop, not far from the OPCW and the city's conference centre (World Forum).

Tram 10 (rush-hours only): from Centraal Station to the Johan de Wittlaan stop.

Tram 1 only from the international station, Holland Spoor, to the World Forum stop.

You should arrive at least a half hour before the beginning of the meeting on the morning of your first contract. If it is a Monday morning, you may need longer (45 minutes to one hour).

Firstly, you need to go to the administration building at 126 Eisenhowerlaan with identification. The security service, on the ground floor, will issue you a security badge.  You need to wear it visibly at all times in the Tribunal buildings and return it to the same security service at the end of your last day, where it will be kept until your next contract.

Once you have your badge, go to the Tribunal's main building.

The Interpretation Unit's offices, nos. 140 and 141, are on the first floor to the left of the stairs. The interpreters' lounge and the programme for the week are there. You should check your programme every evening after 7 p.m., including on the eve of the first day of the contract, at the following number: +31 70 512 86 40. The programme will also be sent to you via e-mail prior to the commencement of your assignment. Please note that the programme is subject to change.

On the afternoon of your first day, you must return to the administration building, 126 Eisenhowerlaan, and go to Ms RoseannaPittman's office on the ground floor to sign your contract. You need to follow this procedure for every contract.

Your fees will be paid by bank transfer three to four weeks after the end of your contract.  You will receive an advance on your per diem during the contract period and the balance will be paid once you submit a claim for travel expenses.
