Senior English Interpreter in ILO

The International Labour Organization has announced a vacancy for a Senior English Interpreter (working from French plus any two of German, Russian, and Spanish) at its headquarters in Geneva.  Full information is provided on the ILO webpage, including access to an on-line application form.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Generic duties

  1. Provide simultaneous, consecutive and whispered interpretation from two or more working languages into the target language at both internal and external organisation meetings, conferences and legislative sessions normally dealing with a wide range of subject matter or substantive topics.
  2. Provide interpretation for especially important, confidential or sensitive formal and informal meetings.
  3. Conduct research to solve problems of terminology and meaning, and prepare multilingual glossaries and other reference tools.
  4. May translate Governing Body documents and other complex texts from two or more working languages into the target language as time permits.

Specific duties

  1. Replace the chief of the Unit when required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education

Advanced-level university degree in languages. Interpreters must pass a competitive examination in addition to the relevant university degree.

Experience

At least seven years of professional interpretation experience of which at least three years at the international level. Demonstrated ability as a conference interpreter at a wide range of international meetings dealing with economic, legal, technical and scientific issues.

Languages

Excellent command of English language and a good knowledge of French and at least two of the following languages: German, Russian and Spanish.

Competencies

Good knowledge and understanding of a particular substantive technical or administrative field and of the subject matter dealt with by the Organisation. Excellent knowledge of interpretation rules and procedures and practices. Ability to grasp the meaning of concepts and terminology and to provide rapid, accurate and idiomatically correct interpretation services. Sound interpretation skills. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to appropriately express words and concepts in the target language. A high degree of knowledge and understanding of a wide range of subjects. Ability to use the most appropriate range of vocabulary and professional, scientific or technical terms to provide rapid, accurate and idiomatically correct interpretation services for a wide variety of often difficult subjects. Full mastery of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation skills. Excellent judgment and the ability to responsibly deal with confidential or sensitive matters. Ability to appropriately express confidential, sensitive and important matters in the target language.
