"Other FORMS of interpretation"
|
|
Conference interpretation is a relatively recent activity. However, its training is the most structured and specific and access to quality training, both in geographic, linguistic and financial terms is greater today. It is taught both at undergraduate and graduate levels. Training entails learning the techniques needed for consecutive, simultaneous and whispered interpretation as well as everything that is implied in a professional attitude. This is the type of interpretation you find mostly in international organisations, and in institutional and private multilingual markets. At present, an international recommendation is being envisaged in UNESCO concerning access to the profession and working conditions for its exercise. This could help to ensure that individuals calling themselves conference interpreters are in fact conference interpreters. Other forms of interpretation are given other names and are exercised in markets other than the world of conferences. Community interpreters are those who work in hospital, police stations and refugee centers. There are also business interpreters, or escort or liaison interpreters. Often these professionals have not undergone formal training. |
