The exercise of the profession does not follow a linear progression or proceed by stages. |
|
In reality it makes no sense to talk about a career in interpretation. There is no hierarchical progression as is the case in public service or in academic careers. What we have are market niches and paths taken or not taken along the road. An option could be to join an international organisation (European Union or the UN, among others) forever or for a few years. This option will give you a lot of exposure in a short time, but may leave you with a certain frustration brought about by the routine, after a few years. Later on, another option could be to become a consultant-interpreter (functions include organizing teams, submitting quotes, recruiting, etc) which entails expertise in the different facets of the organisation of events (contractual, technical, ethical, etc).
