Mirko Coleschi, professional interpreter, contemplative counselor and mindfulness therapist, comes to Paris for a one day seminar about stress management and emotional resilience for interpreters, on 27th January 2018 at ISIT, Paris.

Description

Conference interpreting has been ranked as one of the most stressful professions of our time, beside civil aviation. But whereas pilots cannot control the weather or an aircraft technical failure, interpreters can learn how to master their emotions and land safely. This training is designed to provide both a theoretical framework and practical tolls for stress management, exploring stress as a natural response which can be used as a resource to improve an interpreter’s performance, if duly managed. Develop awareness of emotions as they arise, learn relaxation exercises and increase your stress resilience to improve your skills as a communication expert.

Schedule (9am – 5pm)

Part I – THE INTERPRETER AS EMOTIONAL ANIMAL

  • How stress works
  • The neurophysiology of emotions
  • Working with a storm inside: becoming aware of stressing factors in conference interpreting and other oral communication settings

Part II – TAMING THE MIND

  • Developing awareness of your body through guided exercises aimed at stimulating your emotional responses to stressing experiences
  • Practical relaxation and ex ante stress management exercises from Eastern contemplative traditions as validated by neuroscience (grounding, pranayama, breathing and inside meditation)

Part III – FACING THE STORM AND MAKING THROUGH IT

  • Interactive simulations of stressful interpreting tasks to practice stress management exercises in action (liaison interpreting, sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting)
