Montreal Outreach and Training Events, August 2019

AIIC Canada has an exciting agenda of outreach and training events around the next AIIC PRIMS meeting, scheduled for 24-25 August in Montreal.

22 August, morning: Canadian French

How would you fare if you had to interpret Céline Dion or Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté?  How do Quebeckers, Acadians, and other Canadians whose mother tongue is French actually speak?  And what about bilingual English Canadians and Indigenous Canadians who do not strive to speak à la parisienne?  An informative session that you’ll find practical and fun!

22 August, afternoon: Indigenous Languages and Interpretation

In the context of the UN International Year of Indigenous Languages, find out about Canada’s Bill C-91(Indigenous Languages Act, currently in committee).  Meet and learn about the experiences of Indigenous language interpreters, some of whom have recently provided simultaneous interpretation in the House of Commons.  Curious about our colleagues’ practice and challenges? Come join us and build bridges between our communities.

23 August, full-day workshop: Interpreter Health & Safety and Distance Interpreting

How to protect your health and safety; acoustic shocks; prevention of hearing injuries; up-to-date research on portable protective limiters; questions for your technician you were always afraid to ask: understand interpretation equipment technology; Klaus Ziegler’s update on Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI); demonstrations of RSI platforms.

26–27 August: Julia Poger Seminar: Know Your Worth: Understanding Marketing and Negotiating for Interpreters.

Given the world over, this two-day seminar is aimed at any interpreter who wishes to improve relationships with clients and prospects, gain more respect, and negotiate higher fees. By examining the mindset underlying the marketing and negotiating tasks that interpreters carry out every day, participants will obtain invaluable tools. Julia, a conference interpreter and consultant on marketing, will cover concepts such as branding, selling, client relationships, pricing, negotiating tips, and “coopetition” will be discussed, all illustrated with real-life examples. She focuses on the upstream work that must be done by the interpreter before advertising his/her services, as well as on the preparation involved before beginning the selling and negotiating process.
