AIIC Canada has an exciting agenda of outreach and training events around the next AIIC PRIMS meeting, scheduled for 24-25 August in Montreal.
22 August 2019
9:00 - 12:00: Canadian French
How would you fare if you had to interpret Céline Dion or Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté? An informative, useful and convivial session to introduce interpreters to how French is spoken in different parts of Canada, with a focus on Quebec French, formal and informal. The session will have a mix of theoretical and practical components, special guests, and video clips. Interpreters with French in their language combination will learn about how the French language came to Canada, evolved into modern-day Canadian French, and the differences between it and standard European French.
A side-event that you’ll find practical and fun and you’re welcome to stay for lunch and partake in the afternoon session!
12:00 - 13:30 Catered lunch, on site
13:30 - 16:30: Indigenous Languages and Interpretation
As we celebrate the UN International Year of Indigenous Languages, learn about Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation journey and Bill C-91, the Indigenous Languages Act. Meet and learn about the work of Indigenous language keepers and Indigenous language interpreters, some of whom have recently provided simultaneous interpretation in the House of Commons. Curious about our Indigenous colleagues’ practice and challenges? Come join us and build bridges between our communities.
23 August 2019
09:00 - 12:00: Interpreter Health & Safety
Join with experts and colleagues to discuss health and safety and the law; acoustic shocks and prevention of hearing injuries; understanding the mysteries of interpretation equipment and new technologies; up-to-date research on portable limiters.
12:30 - 14:00 Catered lunch, on site
14:00 - 17:30: Remote Simultaneous Interpretation
Keep well informed with an update on remote interpreting given by Klaus Ziegler of the AIIC Task Force on Distance Interpreting; learn about two Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) platforms: WebSwitcher (Canada) and Interactio (Lithuania). Join the ongoing discussion about the benefits and challenges of RSI and how we must manage these in order to guarantee the highest standards of service to clients and do our job safely. This means providing consistently effective, high quality communication while managing the practical risks associated with the use of these systems such as power cuts, bandwidth and internet disruptions, poor quality sound and visual input, security and privacy issues, let alone contractual issues.
18:00 - 20:00: Catch up with old friends and make new ones over snacks and drinks.
Le Complexe Sky, Bistro-bar Branché, 1478 rue St-Catherine est., Montréal H2L 2J1
(5-minute walk from Centre St-Pierre)
Given the world over, this two-day seminar is aimed at any interpreter who wishes to improve relationships with clients and prospects, gain more respect, and negotiate higher fees. By examining the mindset underlying the marketing and negotiating tasks that interpreters carry out every day, participants will obtain invaluable tools. Julia, a conference interpreter and consultant on marketing, will cover concepts such as branding, selling, client relationships, pricing, negotiating tips, and “coopetition” will be discussed, all illustrated with real-life examples. She focuses on the upstream work that must be done by the interpreter before advertising his/her services, as well as on the preparation involved before beginning the selling and negotiating process.
