AIIC Belgium: Voice-coaching seminar Permalink

Applied Physiology of the Voice is a method developed by the Lichtenberger® Institut für angewandte Stimmphysiologie that redefines voice based on physiology and physics, to reduce the pressure on the larynx and the vocal cords and tap into their real and often unsuspected potential. The workshop will consist of a limited amount of theory and a lot of practical experience, both active (voice production) and passive (developing the ability to perceive changes in other people’s voices). The latter is a fundamental skill to be acquired in this method, as it boosts the participants’ ability to work on their own voice after the end of the workshop. Aspects like the physiology of the voice, timbre, resonance, articulation, intonation, the role of breathing, the sensory system, proprioception and the self-organisation of voice parameters will be discussed with an interactive and hands-on approach. Participants will be given a direct and audible experience of low-pressure voice emission modes that respect and harness human physiology (including neurophysiology) and unleash the full potential of the human voice. Expected medium/long term results include a pleasant, warm, light and yet powerful and authoritative timbre regardless of age, better and more efficient control of intonation and, last but not least, a remarkable reduction in vocal fatigue and wear and tear.

Our trainer is Andrea Caniato, professional interpreter and voice trainer for individuals and groups, guest lecturer on public speaking and voice coaching for Italian and Belgian universities including SSLMIT Trieste, Parma University, Roma III University, Université Libre de Bruxelles.

AIIC Switzerland - Briefing and Discussion on Remote Interpreting Permalink

As agreed by the Regional Meeting that was held at the end of April, tackling remote interpreting (RI) and understanding the main issues around it is now a must. The membership decided we had to roll up our sleeves and reflect, internally, on this subject, before organising an RI seminar in 2020. The Regional Bureau is happy to announce that the Ad Hoc Working Group on Remote interpreting (RI-WG) is now up and running.

It is composed of:

  • Amy Brady, UN Staff
  • Gabriel Cordova, freelancer
  • Joshua Goldsmith, freelancer
  • Ana Liñana-Aguilar, freelancer
  • Lucía Mariño, freelancer
  • Melanie Klemm, freelancer

On 30 November, the RI-WG will present the work it has done so far and we will have an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of remote interpreting as a Region in preparation for the seminar planned for 29 February 2020.

Free event — open to non-AIIC members

AIIC Portugal – Training session on new technologies for interpreters Permalink

New technologies for interpreters are transforming our profession, opening new horizons, and bringing progress. Notwithstanding, they create new challenges and raise several questions. This training session aims to offer an insight into the different platforms and will provide hands-on demonstrations of two platforms currently available on the market.

This one-day training session will be split into two parts.

The morning session will be informative and focused on:

  • Note-taking apps for Consecutive Interpreting
  • Computer-Aided Interpreting (CAI)
  • Bring-your-own-device (BYOD)
  • Over-the-phone interpreting (OPI)
  • Video-remote interpreting systems (VRI)
  • Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI): platforms and requirements

The afternoon session will be very hands-on. James Anderson, Co-founder and President of LINGUALI*, will demo his BYOD platform, and Fardad Zabetian, CEO of KUDO*, will demo his RSI platform. Their presentations will be followed by a debate centered around these platforms.

[* inclusion of any third party providers in AIIC events is for the information of AIIC members only and does not imply any endorsement by AIIC.]

Trainer:

Marzia Sebastiani is a member of the AIIC Italia communication committee, for which she also acts as webmaster, and of the AIIC Technical and Health Committee. She developed an interest in technologies for conference interpreters while she was writing her research thesis on automotive terminology, which was then awarded the Prix International de Terminologie by Maria Teresa Cabré in 2004. Since then she has been closely following all technological innovations in the field of conference interpreting and holding seminars for fellow interpreters about the use of tablets and
terminology management applications in the booth, accounting software for freelancers and remote interpreting.

How to register:

This training session is free. Priority registration is offered to AIIC Portugal members. A limited number of places will be made available to AIIC members from other regions. For more information, please contact prt-regionalbureau@xmjd1.aiic.net before 30th November.
