Conference interpreters work for businesses, government and international organisations to convert information from one spoken language to another. Most interpreters are self-employed and have variable schedules.
Freelance conference interpreters are self-employed. They are employed on a short-term basis. They are contracted to work on a short-term basis on specific tasks for various clients in succession. Since they often work for a wide variety of organisations, they cover many different subjects and work for many different kinds of people.
Staff interpreters are temporary or permanent employees of national or international organisations. They have a steady income but have less freedom in planning their own work.
