IMF announces opening for Deputy Chief Interpreter

Candidates must have advanced university degree, at least 8 years of conference interpreting experience, and proven leadership/team-building abilities.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking to fill the position of Deputy Chief Interpreter in its Washington, D.C. headquarters.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Interpreter, provides advice and guidance, and participates in the coordination of Interpretation Services operations. Significantly contributes to interpretation services and works with the Chief Interpreter during the Spring and Annual Meetings, and assists in the planning and coordination of the unit’s work program.

Advises the Chief Interpreter on technological advances in simultaneous interpretation equipment and software development which may result in more efficient services. Advises and provides guidance to staff. Helps oversee administration of the budget for contractual interpreters, in the verification and approval of interpretation expenses, and in the preparation of budget estimates. Works as conference interpreter.

May actively participate in the management and appraisal of Interpretation Services staff and LS staff with interpreting functions. Conducts interpretation recruitment campaigns, as needed. 

Performs backup functions in the absence of the Chief Interpreter.


The successful candidate must possess a relevant advanced university degree and be an experienced conference interpreter (at least eight years), with proven skills in planning, organizing, and coordinating interpretation services. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and officials of diverse cultural backgrounds at all levels. Ability to negotiate; decisiveness and good judgment, coupled with the ability to deliver high quality interpretation services promptly and effectively, and to follow up on a daily basis on the work of numerous interpreters assigned worldwide.

Full proficiency in an automated environment is a must. Ability to prepare budget estimates. Familiarity with other organizations’ policies and the profession’s practices regarding the recruitment, staffing, and remuneration of interpreters.

Proven leadership and team-building abilities. Ability to manage and appraise staff.
