International Day of Sign Languages - 23 September
In 2017 the United Nations declared that 23 September would be celebrated annually as the International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), as part of the International Week of the Deaf (IWDeaf). This year—the first commemoration of IDSL—the day will launch the IWDeaf week under the theme ‘With Sign Language, Everyone is Included!’ AIIC’s Sign Language Network is showing its support by releasing a congratulatory video on the 23rd… watch this space to see the video!
To commemorate the IDSL, on 13 September the UNOG Division of conference management and the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) Committee with the support of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) are hosting a day of awareness-raising activities at the UN in Geneva. The activities are coordinated by Rebecca Edgington, responsible for the sign language interpreter provision at UNOG. Activities include a pop-up sign language café, a sign language guided tour of the Palais des Nations, a screening of the Oscar-winning film “The Silent Child”, a Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities High-level Panel, and screenings of Nurith Aviv’s film “Signer en Langue

AIIC congratulates the World Federation of the Deaf and all those from the sign language community who have raised the profile of sign language and made this recognition a reality.
